Confounding Cupcakes!

I thought this would be fun. I had missed a couple of challenges for Karin Jurick's Different Strokes from Different Folks blog. I thought....o, yummy ...a subject near and dear to my heart, "this should be easy." HA!

I have never spend so much time on a challenge piece! Four separate painting sessions, correcting most of the time and trying to keep from scraping it all off and starting over.

I thought I'd be clever and flip the image so the shadow was on the opposite side and then line them up vertically because the majority of the submissions were horizontal. [also because my fav artists had already painted my previous ideas of close ups and other lay-outs]

I started out with a off white background on a burnt sienna toned canvas. Wasn't happy with it, gave it a yellow wash; REALLY hated it and then gave it a green wash and then finally a bright green layer.

The cupcakes didn't turn out the creamy way I wanted like some of the other challenge artists did. They remind me of the display food Japanese restaurants have in their front window for customers to look at that can look a little dusty after time. Learned a lot though...[patience for one]

First Sheila, thanks for your comments on my "Colors for the Palate". It always is so encouraging to hear others' observations. Makes one get going on the next project.
And, although I only did one cupcake in my rendition, I agree, they sure were "dang confounding cupcakes".
Beg to differ w/you. Yours look fresh and ready for eating. Ummmmmm! You did make them look as such. Definitely have not been in store window collecting dust mites. Clever comp. Who would have thought of this idea but one stretching her mind to come up with something "different". These are bright, well-drawn & composed. Love it. Ruth

I love your long vertical format and background color! It feels almost like a landscape. Vibrant and exciting.

I agree they weren't easy to paint, when I first saw the ref. photo, I thought it would be a piece of cake! I struggled too, your rendition is original from all the others and you won the battle and ended up with a wonderful painting.

Sheila, I was immediately drawn to your painting not only by the vertical composition..great idea by the way...but by the wonderful background and shadows. Great job.

Cupcakes... such inventive placement! They're a delight. And the beautiful shadow of the bok choy came forward in my awareness when I looked again tonight at your most recent postings.

Your originality just SHINES... Your willingness to take risks, explore possibilities and successes are delicious.

As for your parenting, I've met your children and believe me YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB! They are polite (always an accomplishment in teenagers), respectful and they actually seem to think that adults might have something of value to listen to. This trust is special and shows that you've done a lot right.

You're a star in my book. Bravo!
