Day in Dublin

Dublin, California that is. Our Dublin is a neighboring city just south of where I live. Of course, they have a St. Patrick's Day Festival and parade every year. My daughter and her friend and I went to check out the fair.

As we were leaving, I caught these two teens about to tackle their lunch. Interesting how one of them contemplates how to approach her meal and the other just dives in.

I keep going back to this style of painting with the blue outlines and simple shapes. What do you think?

18x24 oil on canvas.

A lovely style, Sheila, and your shadows link the elements of the design. It is also a lovely 21st century lifestyle depiction!

You've got a very appealing style there, Sheila. Well done!

Your cols are bit intense for my delicate tastes but the blue shadows really bathe the scene in the brightest sun.

First I want to say how much I love this painting.
Secondly..... I live in Dublin, Ohio....lol. We have the second biggest Irish Festival in the country. I happens in August and bands come from Ireland. Last year they had over 100,000 in attendance for 3 days....yikes.

I love this one Sheila.
The blue shadows and the blue outline works perfect together.
I think that this one is the most beautiful piece. I had my favorite before, an dnow it is this one.
Can I say above well done?

Such typical teenager! Mine would have been the one on the left. Mouth full of food, dripping juice all over herself:)
I like the blue outline, especially with the green color that often shows up in your paintings. It has a nice energy.

I very much like the quality of the blue lines. Fresh : )

The blue outlines are very much like the work of Wayne Thiebaud. You have a knack at capturing gestures, which probably stems from your forensic drawings, but is still delightful and pleasing!

Sheila, I think you have hit on a style that really works...all my favorites of yours are approached this way, great piece!

Hey I used to live in Dublin, Calif. that is, back in the late 70's. Got to reminiscing when I saw that. I like how you've used the blue in your rendering. I like this very much.

I agree with Kathy. This piece is reminiscent of Thiebaud's division of space and colorful under-painting with rich creamy impasto layers on top. It is a lusciously beautiful work!

This is a wonderful "snapshot" from your day in Dublin. When I first saw it I thought they must be at a parade.

I love the blues. The blues in the shadows really enhance the feeling of bright daylight.

I think this is quite a unique and exquisite style, Sheila! This piece is so cool! I was struck by your noticing their approach to their food. Now I think the girl on the right (looking at the painting) is the neat one and the other has a super messy room! LOL I'd have been the girl on the right. This looks like it was a fun day and for some reason I find myself wishing I could have gone with you! I think we'd be great friends!!

Well, here's what my first reaction was...oddly enough. I remembered the feeling of the concrete on the back of my legs as I sat on curbs in younger days. I never thought then about what a nice feeling that was. So you painted that sunlight just beautifully because without even thinking about it I felt it!

I like the blue, Sheila... it's colorful, pleasing to the eye and effective. I've been catching up on your blog and amazed at how busy you've been. Your art for Following the Masters depicting DaVinci's sketches and notes is not only awesomely talented by ingeneously novel. Great, Sheila!

Sheila this is great! The blue is a vibrant effect that helps portray
this sunny day.
Also the contrast of one 'chowing'
and the other contemplating is very successful!
The green background is a nice hint that there's somthing Irish
going on here!
You painted a fun, slice of life!

Sheila!

You did a nice job on the left-hand figure and captured her stuffing her face nicely! LOL

As far as styles.

Well, this one stands out more. The blue lines and intense colors just speak to me. But that's just my preference.

Others might think it's too much and prefer something like the still life you posted just before this.

I guess it depends on what YOU like!

I'm glad you were able to apply some of your forensic experience to this painting to "analyze" the 2approaches to eating these hotdogs. LOL I really like unique and different; this painting has it. Color and subject matter. Love it!

I like that there are places where the edges intermingle with the adjoining color. Take a look at some of Karin Jurick's latest. She mentions edges doing this. :)

This is so fun. Wonderful paint quality and subject.

I LOVE this, too, and think the blue lines are great! Keep up the good work.

Let me guess -- the whole background is blue? What a radiance. The turquoise is fantastic. And so are the girls. Wonder why, but I find this picture very Japanese. 40 years ago, when I studied art, there was a Japanese colleague whose paintings had some similarities with this style, can't remember his name.
