California Roll

Okay so I was a little intimidated with DSFDF's challenge and it didn't help matters when I noticed some of my favorite artists like Gwen Bell and Dean Haven whipped theirs out like it was yesterday's newspaper and doing a wonderful job at it.  I also loved seeing  Deb Keirce's adorable adaptation of the challenge.

So when I started this morning, I was repeating Karin's mantra, squint and paint the shapes..  Unfortunately maybe it was to my disadvantage that I've had this California roll many times and I knew that there was fake crab [Krab], avocado, cucumbers and tobiko [flying fish roe] sprinkled on top.  I think the soy sauce has a 'brown gravy' look to it and I'd be interested to see what you used to paint your soy sauce.  Thanks in advance.

5x7 oil on canvasboard.

Hey Sheila,
Great job! They look good enough to eat! I've never painted soy sauce so I can't help you here!

California rolls are not my favorite, but yours look so good I want to eat them. I see now why the crab inside this sushi is shaped perfectly. ;)

Very realistic fer sure, but I'm with Akiko...the last time I had sushi like this was the
last time I had sushi like this. And for realism on the sauce, I used real soy sauce. However, the roaches found it, ate a hole in the canvas, and I had to start over.

Hey! Thanks for the comment on my california rolls. Your painting is GORGEOUS!! When I look at my painting posted on her blog with all the others it makes me feel a bit inadequate....lol i use the squinting technique with my landscapes, maybe I should try it with other stuff too.

Good job Sheila,
I think your soy sauce looks like it will spill off the canvas any minute. Very realistic.

I like you soy sauce - mine must be a cheapo bargain brand because it doesn't seem as thick as yours. LOL
From wigs to soy sauce - I love this DSDFD.

Very nice Sheila! I am amazed that you painted the grains of rice on the rolls, they look great! You really captured the sushi and soy sauce.

I'd eat that sushi! I'm like Akiko, California rolls are not usually on my order sheet but those look very plump with goodies and I can taste the soy sauce from Arkansas!

Sheila this looks yummy.
A compliocated subject which I think you have painted very well.
Not much of a cook myself, nor would I dare try and paint a similar subject.
You can turn your artistic hands to anything.

Great job on your sushi and soy sauce! I've got to go out and eat some yummy sushi likes yours before I start my painting.

Sheila, I think you nailed the soy sauce--it's the highlights along the edge that make it work. Also, I like the way you offset the sushi--great composition.

Sheila, your sushi turned out fab. One of my friends told me mine looked like bloody meatballs. They did look kinda red on Karin's site, but a little better on mine. Thanks for the nice comments about my first watercolor class.

As much as I want to follow in your footsteps- be a true monastic artist, I can't bring myself to voluntarily put "bait" in my mouth! ha ha Glad to see you have been a busy-bee. Hope your weekend has been a good one- T

Did I compliment your sushi yet? The rice looks so real. I had no idea of the challenge of rendering rice until this week.
