Palm Tree Trio

One of my fav artists Dana Cooper painted a set of palm trees on one of her recent posts. I told her I have wanted to try and paint palm trees and love the way she rendered hers. She told me she wanted to see how I would treat the subject.

They may be a simple subject for others but this took me 2 days, wiping, repainting and repositioning the third palm. I'm not entirely happy with it but its a start.

...and a GREAT start it is... Kudos on challenging yourself. I think you'll be able to mark palm trees off your challenge list now. :-)

Sheila, The colors turned out great. The thick paint is good. You probably learned more in this than something that goes in easily. I think we learn more from our mistakes and trying and trying again. Good job!

The colors are great and your brushwork is so effective! Lovely.

I think this is so pretty, Sheila. The sky colors are gorgeous, the odd growing third palm is perfect; I've seen them grow this way! You've handled the fronds so wonderfully well too!

Sheila, this is wonderful. You really emphasized the negative space with the placement of the trees. I say, very well done!

Lovely Sheila. I like how you have captured the light coming through the palm leaves. I feel like I am on a beach, sun going down, Margarita in hand, Bob Marley tunes softly playing in the back ground :)

Oh my, Sheila!!! I haven't been able to visit for a few days and wow, have you been busy. Thanks for the link to Dana's blog, amazing work! Her brushwork is incredible and reminds me of yours. First, Dubious Welcome is simply stunning! I absolutely love everything you've done here since I last visited!!! Paint on! Bravo!

Another great thing about blogging, the inspiration and motivation we get from other artists! I hope you do more palm trees. How funny you mentioned Dana. I got am email from her yesterday that she'll be in my town and hope we can meet for coffee depending on her schedule, which will be busy. Another great thing about blogging...I never would have even known her (any blogger) several years ago.

Very nice, great colors. I see you have been very busy lately, great work. I love you style and your brushwork, you make me want to take up oil :)

Sheila - I think you should NOT worry about how you paint palm trees - these are TDF! Now I need a cold drink and a good book, and comfy lounge chair - and I'm climbing right in your painting!
Ken Auster also has an interesting method for painting palm trees. He makes a 'lollipop' and cuts in with a brush full of sky, then puts some highlights on the front fronds.

I've never tackled palm trees, but from what I have heard they are difficult to paint. You did a great job! And, like everyone else, I could enjoy a good book sitting under these trees! :-)

Yay Sheila, I knew they would be fabulous in your very Sheila style...way to go! Love the sky too!
Thanks for the shout out!
